Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865. Here are three ways we can honor this day.
Black Liberation Ride
Meet at Irving Park at 5:30pm, roll at 6pm.
A community bike ride for Black + Brown Portlanders as a celebration of the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African, aka Black Independence Day!

Here's the ride description from the leaders, Jené Etheridge and Stephen Marea:
Sometimes self-care means holding space with your community. Let’s get together, take up space and celebrate in solidarity by riding around Portland. Along the way we’ll point out local Black history and end in a park for a socially distant hangout.
This ride is FOR THE BLACK / BROWN COMMUNITY. We’ve heard from many folks that it has been a very difficult time to be in Portland, aka The Whitest City in the U.S.
**If you do not identify as Black / Brown, please respect this and share with your Black, Indigenous, People of Color friends and colleagues**
For our non-BIPOC supporters, you can DONATE funds or resources to the Black Liberation Ride campaign, we’ll use the funds for BLR spoke cards and snacks, and will donate the rest of the proceeds to Portland African American Leadership Forum (PAALF) -- Venmo: @Jene-Etheridge
This ride is kid-friendly, NO DROP, and open to all rider levels.
Rider checklist:
- Face mask (recommended, but not required)
- Water bottle
- Helmet (if you don’t have one, don’t worry)
- Something comfortable to ride in
- Any flags, shirts, whatever you want to rep the culture
